1) Mental Munchie of The Month: EXAMINING THE DOUGH
It's February! The new year is officially the NOW year. By NOW,
- the parties were celebrated
- the off-days subsided
- the interest rate on 'real life' compounded
Financial underpinning is slightly on purpose - ok very - it's the rainbow-coloured elephant in the room!! There is no country that isn't in some fashion, stomped by this economy.
Now that I've bummed everyone out, it is said "When the going gets tough, the tough gets going."
Well to a degree, I agree. Being tough cookies can be award-winning, inspirational stuff.
But may I offer perhaps a different personal opinion (activate mental yoga here):
When the cookies get tough, we examine the dough.
During tough economic times, instead of throwing our heads and bills against the wall, it can be a time of reflection: what REALLY makes us happy? In Yoga, there is a philosophy of Santosa - Contentment. Benjamin Franklin said, "Who is rich? He that is content." Ironically, with a little inventory, this can be the richest times of our lives.
It is during these questionable times that I REALLY fell in love with my work again. When I look long enough, that hand-me-down furniture is starting to look pretty ghetto-fabulous. Because yoga isn't just physical and because I love you, let February be a reflective time of changing the ingredients of our dough (pun shamelessly intended) by:
- re-evaluating what we need versus what we want
- re-assessing what true wealth means to us personally
- re-committing to become the best ____ we work everyday to be
So may February bring us real success, not by being tough cookies.
But by being smart cookies.

2) YOGI OF THE MONTH
February Yogi: Crystin Wiegers
Why: Crystin is a consistent practitioner in Yoga. She is edgy and multi-talented (law degree + talented with camera + good friend). I sat down with her recently to ask why she keeps her coming back to the mat...
Crystin
Why I practice: "Yogahcitta vritti nirodhah" translates to "yoga stills the fluctuations of the mind." Which, in my world, translates to yoga helps me quiet my brain so that I can be a better me.
Favourite Pose: Parivrtta Trikonasana, Twisting triangle. Ya, I know, I'm weird.
What makes me happy: In general, knowing that I can wake up every day and do whatever I want to do. (On Saturdays, that usually involves going to Zhi's class) Specifically, playing the drums, going to see bands play, pretending that I'm a photographer, my friends, the Local Yolk, yoga and all of its 8 branches, phones with QWERTY...
What I am working on: Maintaining a consistent yoga practice no matter how crazy my work schedule gets is definitely something that I'm working on.
Crystin on Zhi: Zhi is magical. So are her classes. They are playful & fun, and her incredible musical selections punctuate her class themes in an amazing way. She is always telling us that we are doing "super", but basically, she is just a super special person & a super special yoga teacher.

Yoga in Sakrit YUJ means UNITY (in body-mind-spirit). Yoga is physical, but not just that. Besides our tangible practice, my sincere hope is also to share:
1) "Mental Yoga" = Examining The Dough
2) "Spirit Yoga" = Yogi of The Month Crystin Wiegers
